The statute of limitations has expired in the case of murder of businessman from Yelabuga Aidar Israfilov, in the organization of which the former rector of Kazan Federal University (KFU) Ilshat Gafurov was accused.

According to the interlocutor of the newspaper, the expiration of the term does not mean automatic release of Gafurov from criminal responsibility. The question of his release remains at the discretion of the court.

Gafurov is charged under the article on murder for hire by a group of persons by prior conspiracy (paragraphs “g”, “h” part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code). According to the investigation, in 1999 he ordered the murder of Aidar Israfilov, a deputy of the Yelabuga City Council, who publicly criticized Gafurov, the former head of Yelabuga. Israfilov was shot dead in 1999 near the CSKA sports complex in Moscow.

In September 2023, Moscow’s Savelovsky Court sentenced Adygan Salyakhov, leader of the 29th Complex organized crime group from Naberezhnye Chelny, to 25 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of Aidar Israfilov. During the investigation, Salyakhov pointed to Gafurov, claiming that the ex-rector, who was also a member of the OCG, was the initiator of the murder. Gafurov himself denies his guilt.
