Roskomnadzor (RKN) has recorded 135 leaks of databases in 2024, reports “RIA Novosti” with reference to the press service of the agency. It noted that more than 710 million records about Russians leaked into the network. “In 2024, Roskomnadzor recorded 135 cases of distribution of databases containing more than 710 million records on the Internet,” the RKN said in a statement.
In February, 2024 deputy head of the agency Milos Wagner said that since the beginning of the year, more than 510 million records about Russians have leaked online, with 500 million of them as a result of a single incident. He then noted that in 2023 compared to 2022, the number of data compromises has increased, but the amount of data itself has decreased. “And this year, this one incident covered almost the entire previous year,” he added.
RKN in 2023 recorded 168 leaks of personal data, and about 300 million records about Russians got into the network. In 2022, after the start of the “special operation “*, 600 million records about citizens leaked into the network, at that time the agency recorded over 140 leaks.
At the end of November 2024, Vladimir Putin signed laws tightening the responsibility for leaks of personal data. The laws introduce negotiable fines for companies for leaks and criminalize the illegal use and transfer of personal data, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
