In 2024, personal data of 90% of Russians leaked out of databases to the public.

In 2023 and the first half of 2024, the main source of personal data leaks were online stores and medical institutions, while banks accounted for no more than 2%, said Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Sberbank (MOEX: SBER). He called the situation with the leaks deplorable, specifying that personal data of about 90% of the adult population of the Russian Federation got into open access.

According to Mr. Kuznetsov, last year was the peak of leaks, and in 2024 they became a little less. According to the bank’s forecast, the damage to the Russian economy from cyberattacks in 2023-2024 may approach 1 trillion rubles if the situation does not change. It is expected that this year the amount of money stolen from Russians will reach about 250 billion rubles. Sberbank’s deputy chairman added that data leakage or money theft “has a trend to increase.”

In February-March, the bank recorded a peak of 20 million fraudulent calls per day, now this figure has dropped to 6-6.5 million calls per day, Stanislav Kuznetsov said. “But nevertheless, all these calls have become more professional. These scams have become more elaborate,” he said at the SOC Forum cybersecurity forum.

In the first nine months of 2024, the number of phishing resources detected and blocked on the Internet increased by 116% compared to the same period last year, Kommersant was informed by the Solar group of companies. Experts noted that this year hackers started to massively use phishing domains of the third and deeper levels, which complicates the search for malicious resources.
