A criminal former Russian defense minister has been sentenced.

Moscow City Court found former Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov guilty of embezzlement and money laundering. He was sentenced to 13 years of general regime colony and a fine of 100 million rubles. The court decision deprived him of state awards. A former subordinate of ex-deputy defense minister Anton Filatov was sentenced to 12.5 years in a penal colony.

Timur Ivanov was accused of embezzlement in the purchase of two ferries for the Kerch crossing. According to the case materials, in April-June 2015, he and his accomplices bought the ferries through the company Tourinvest Services Limited for €12.4 million.

Then he and his accomplices bought the vessels from the company for the same funds received from the state. The amount of damage reached 216.6 million rubles. They also embezzled €44.9 million (at the time 3.92 billion rubles) from Interkommerts Bank, anticipating the revocation of the organization’s license.

The state prosecution requested 14.5 years of general regime for Mr. Ivanov. He did not admit guilt. During his last word, the former deputy head of the Defense Ministry stated that if he had anything to be tried for, it was not for embezzlement and money withdrawal.

In addition to the sentences, the defendants were fined: 100 million rubles. Ivanov and 25 million rubles. Filatov. The former deputy minister was also deprived of the Order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the 3rd degree and the title “Honorary Builder”. The court also ruled to confiscate the property of the convicts in the amount of 216 million rubles laundered by the defendants.

Under arrest remained money and real estate of the defendants, including two plots of land owned by Filatov and located in the Moscow region, as well as cash and a 2013 Cadillac car with an estimated value of 1.3 million rubles. Ivanov was arrested, in particular, an apartment in the center of the capital on Povarskaya Street with an area of 317.2 square meters with a cadastral value of 115 million rubles, a residential house with an area of 344 square meters in the village of Arkhangelskoye for 8.8 million rubles. In addition, during searches at his place of residence he was found 56 million rubles, and another 5.8 million rubles – in his offices on Frunzenskaya Embankment. And in another apartment in Chisty Pereulok the deputy minister was found another 2.5 million rubles, $13.5 thousand and €14.7 thousand. 2.2 million rubles were kept on his account in VTB Bank. All this property was left under arrest to collect fines from the convicted and to pay lawsuits.

Timur Ivanov is also accused of taking two bribes: for Rb 1.2 billion and Rb 152 million. The second case was initiated on June 21, it is related to the supply of canned vegetables.
